Pepes sink Samoa to claim netball bronze

PAPUA New Guinea’s netball team defeated host nation Samoa 64-35 for bronze at the Pacific Games in Apia on Saturday.
After losing the opportunity to play for gold on Thursday, Samoa came back fighting, but not as strongly as PNG.
PNG looked settled and quickly moved around the court, finding space. Samoa looked tired and were always one step behind.
PNG continued to defend strongly all the way down the court, making it challenging for Samoa’s offence.
PNG appeared to be in total control at quarter time, leading 16-8. Samoa changed their defence around completely in the second quarter but PNG goal-attack Boio Peter kept making it all look too easy.
Samoa, who won bronze four years ago in Port Moresby, showed flashes of the brilliant netball they played on Thursday night.
But they made mistakes and lost possession.
Samoa came out fighting in the last quarter, scoring two goals in quick succession.
However, PNG just kept on running and goal-shooter Jeperth Tulapi kept scoring. Their win was never in doubt.
Despite a strong start to their Games campaign, PNG were outclassed later in the tournament by a faster Cook Islands side.
PNG coach Richanda Kassman was pleased with the result.
“These are young girls coming through to take their opportunity. I am excited about the future of netball in PNG,” she said.
