Philemon happy with tax law
The National – Tuesday, March 15, 2011
Member for Lae, Bart Philemon has applauded the new property tax law unanimously passed last week by the Morobe provincial assembly.
The Improvement on Land Tax Act 2011 imposes a tax on improvements on all land excluding customary land.
But, before giving his vote for the bill, Philemon blasted the provincial administration for not doing enough and taking too long to come up with revenue earning ideas and policies for the province.
He said companies and individuals were being taxed but not benefiting from it or getting value for money.
Philemon said the business community in Lae should also have been consulted before the bill was drafted.
Minister for Defence and Member for Kabwum, Bob Dadae was also in support of the bill but said the administration should also look at other ways of earning revenue for the province.
