PHOENIX recorded their second victory in a row after they beat winless Telikom 3-1 in round two of the National Capital District Volleyball Association competition last weekend.
Telikom claimed the first set 25-15 as spikers Steven Geita, Jaydan Hobert and Christopher Nanai set the platform for a strong start.
Phoenix quickly re-grouped to bag the second set 25-22.
In the third and fourth sets, Telikom spikers tried to get their side back in the contest, but Phoenix’s Ila Mark covered the court well to send his side on their way to victory.
“We lost control in the first set, but managed to respond swiftly thereafter,” Phoenix captain Pokana Kulu said.
“We’ve been in the competition for a few years now and we’d like to make our mark this season.
“Starting the season with two wins is a positive sign for us as we aim to reach the finals.”
But Kulu said they would need to polish up on a few areas for round three.
“We were slack in our defence especially with our blocks,” he said.
“This week, we will focus on that and our serves.
“We gave away free points with our serves.”
Meanwhile, Kulu said his players were pushing for spots in the association’s contingent to the national championships.
“We’re aware of the national championships, so I’ve encouraged my players to put in more effort,” he said.
“Hopefully, some of my players get a call-up,” Kulu said ahead of round three.
