A MAN who stole a K2,399 phone from a woman has been jailed for eight months.
Mt Hagen District Court magistrate Betty Jacob told Jeremiah Hawi of Mulikata village in Laiagam, Enga that stealing was a serious offence which carried a maximum penalty of K4,000 in fine and a two-year jail term.
Hawi, on Dec 31 last year at around 11am, stole a mobile phone belonging to Josephine Teng.
The court was told that Teng was talking to someone on the phone when Hawi grabbed it and fled.
He was spotted in the city five days later, and detained.
Hawi admitted stealing the phone but said he had given it to someone to sell.
He asked the court for leniency, saying he would not do it again.
The police prosecutor asked the court to impose a custodial sentence to serve as a deterrent.
She told the court that the phone Hawi stole was not recovered.
Magistrate Jacob told Hawi that what he did was wrong, and that he showed no respect for women.
“Now I will send you to Baisu jail for eight months with hard labour,” she said.
She deducted one month for the time spent in police custody.
