Pig killing festival for province

THE PIG-Killing festival will be revived in Jiwaka next week to keep the cultural practice alive.
Jiwaka Kongar chairman Jack Kulam said the festival was an event of major cultural significance to all Jiwakans.
He said it was an annual event that gave people a unique feeling of belonging as their ancestors used to celebrate this way at tribal festivals in their areas.
Kulam said the famous Kongar (pig killing) festival would be held at Karkonza village in Banz together with the festivals of national bilasim skin, coffee and traditional music and dance celebrations.
Kulam said he had invited all the Jiwakans to come in their unique traditional attires and dancing groups to celebrate their culture and identity at the festival.
He said the Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA) had taken lead in the sponsorship of the cultural event and urged Jiwaka’s parliamentarians, elites and others to come on board with sponsors as it was an event of provincial importance.
“The event is signifying our past to benefit our present and will provide opportunities for our future.”
Kulam said cultures and traditions were an important and focal point in PNG society as they held the values for conduct.
