THE Pacific International Hospital has been awarded the tender to commission and operate the Port Moresby Private Hospital in Boroko.
The selection of PIH for this public-private partnership initiative was agreed to by IPBC board.
IPBC board chairman Glenn Blake said in statement that PIH would carry out a major refurbishment programme prior to establishing an international standard hospital.
“The hospital will be developed in stages and, in the near future, it will be capable of carrying out advanced medical services such as diagnosis and operations for heart disease and cancer among other medical services which Papua New Guineans currently can only access by flying abroad,” he said.
Blake said that following the issue of tenders for the hospital, three major groups had been shortlisted – the InterFinancial Consortium, an international hospital group operating in Iraq; Pacific International Hospital, which operates a private hospital in Port Moresby, and JTA International, a specialised health and medical consultancy.
The international accounting and consulting group, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Ltd, recommended the selection of PIH, after a detailed evaluation of their financial capacity, their proven track record and impressive plans for the new hospital, which includes training of staff towards accreditation preparedness, offer advanced training for post-graduate medical and nursing professionals and specialised allied health training.
The hospital building, which was completed in 2000 in Boroko, is expected to be commissioned and commence phase I operations in about a year’s time.
It will be staffed with more than 500 personnel.
