PNG swimming hope Ryan Pini finished fourth in his 100m butterfly heat yesterday in 52.68 seconds after leading from the turn.
Swimming in his third Olympics, Pini kept pace with the leaders and looked to have timed his effort well when he led with 20m remaining.
However, the 30-year-old was overtaken in the last 10m as Bence Pulai of Hungary, Dinko Jukic of Austria and Bence Pulai of Slovenia edged him for the top three places in heat 3.
Pini would have been a little disappointed in not swimming sub-52, a goal he had set going into the event.
He now joins Raymond Ovinou and Dika Toua as PNG athletes who have completed their participation.
Fellow swimmer Judith Meauri swims in the women’s 50m freestyle heats tonight while weightlifter Steven Kari will compete in the 85kg division also at the same time.
South Africa Chad le Clos recorded the best time out of the six heats clocking 51.54 in heat 5.
