FILIPINO boxers, Dado Cabintoy and Jone Maxian, used accurate body punching to stop their PNG opponents, Jason Hayeu and Douglas Walo at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex last night.
Cabintoy claimed the World Professional Boxing Federation (WPBF) bantamweight belt after knocking out Hayeu in the ninth round while Maxian shattered Walo’s title dreams in two rounds to claim the light welterweight title.
Continuous body shots from the two Filipinos made the difference in their first international WPBF challenge in Port Moresby.
Experience was a telling factor as the Pinoys outpunched their PNG opponents.
The fight between Hayeu and Cabintoy was marred by poor lighting in the indoor stadium.
WPBF Australian international referee Brad Vocale continued with the fight despite the poor lighting and it was disappointing for PNG’s Hayeu, who was leading on points before the stoppage in the ninth round.
Cabintoy landed a left to Hayeu’s mid-section that floored him and Vocale counted him out.
The Filipino, sensing a tiring Hayeu, increased his punch out-put for the desired result.
Hayeu had the Filipino in trouble in the earlier rounds with series of shots to the body and face but Cabintoy ducked and weaved enough to keep out of harm’s way.
Vice-Minister for Trade,  Industry and Commerce Ronnie Knight was disappointed because the facility owners, PNG Sports Foundation, failed to put on the lights, which denied Hayeu the opportunity to win.
In the other title bout, it was a total disaster for PNG’s Walo who was floored in less than two minutes by the cool and experienced Maxian.
The local boy edged out the Filipino in round one but was caught flush by a well-timed counter that dumped the usually durable Kairuku native.
In the PNG title bouts, junior middleweight John Deklam knocked out Toksy Seteme in the second round while featherweight Joe Kara did the same to Theo Torot in the first round and light welterweight Kevin Baki knocked out Simon Hela in the fourth round.
In the lightweight division, Johnson Kapus scored a unanimous points decision over Thomas Kagili while in the flyweight Tony Waisa knocked out Jimmy Pius in round two and Kevin Ragu scored a technical knock out over Elwin Wafewa in round four for their welterweight title fight.
