Piracy down after district fixes police patrol boats

Momase

PIRACY in Morobe waters has dropped after the two police patrol boats were fixed by Huon Gulf district.
Piracy had been a problem since 2010 in the seas off Lae-Northern, Lae-Finschhafen and Tewae-Siassi and had resulted in the loss of property, injury and death.
There have been no reports of piracy since the setting up of a sea patrol base at Morobe with the use of mv Labi and mv Mangae.
“So far, police have not received any sea piracy reports after the launching of the police base at Morobe patrol post in 2016,” provincial police commander Augustine Wampe said.
Wampe said Huon Gulf MP Ross Seymour helped source funding for the repair of mv Labi.
“We are expanding to Finschhafen, Wasu and Siassi Islands to ensure the waters are safe for people to travel,” he said.
He appealed to the MPs of Finschhafen, Kabwum, Tewae-Siassi and Nawaeb to help police fight piracy.
Meanwhile, police have arrested seven people linked to a rape case and other criminal activities on Siassi Island.
