PJV praises workers for efforts after earthquake

THE Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) has commended the efforts of its tradespersons in maintaining machines after the 2018 earthquake in Hela.
PJV mobile equipment maintenance superintendent Paul Bailey said it was the work of the tradespersons that allowed the mine to continue using most of its machines after the earthquake.
“From the earthquake, we all dug our heels in at maintenance. We had lots of trades here and needed across the business. Whether it was boilermakers sent up to Hides to rebuild the power plant or down working on the generators,” he said.
Bailey said the tradespersons were involved in two types of activities; fixing damages caused by the earthquake and in preventive maintenance work.
The preventive maintenance work was done on machines needing repairs which future disasters such as the earthquake would not cause much damage.
Bailey said the mine partially stopped operation when the earthquake struck.
