PLANS are underway to upgrade Vanimo Airport in West Sepik and other airports in the country.

Civil Aviation Minister Davis Steven told Parliament yesterday that the people of West Sepik would soon have a new-look airport with improved flight services.

Steven was responding to queries by West Sepik Governor Akmat Mai on improving flight services to the province and the upgrading of the airport.

He said the airport and others in the country would be upgraded under the airport improvement programme funded by the Asian Development Bank.

“The people of Sandaun should be happy to note that Vanimo Airport is under the airport upgrade programme and will soon see improvements,” Steven said.

He said after the improvement to the airport, Air Niugini’s Fokker 100 planes could fly there.

He referred requests for increased flight services by Air Niugini to the Minister for Public Enterprise and plans to upgrade Vanimo Airport to an international status to Transport Minister Ano Pala.
