Players, staff feel more settled at Runaway Bay

Sports

Hello everyone, welcome to the eighth ‘Churchie’s comment’ for the year in your favourite rugby league newspaper — The National.
The SP Hunters enjoyed some time away from the training and football field over the Easter long weekend.
We got some training done in the early part of the week and then gave the boys some time to relax and enjoy their new surroundings.
We did arrange for a visit to the Broncos training facility, a lot of our players are huge Broncos fans so it was an opportunity to get down there and see their set up.
Unfortunately for our boys, the Covid-19 protocols meant limited access as the facility was closed.
We did, however, get to have a barbeque at the facility, the same barbeque area that has been used across the Broncos lifetime.
Where legends like Allan Langer, Darren Lockyer and Petero Civoniceva would have sat after captains run with a barbeque with the club’s Old Boys.
It was a great opportunity to have the Hunters come along, hopefully next time we get to mingle with the current players and staff.
Preparation for our round three game against Mackay Cutters is well underway.
We have a lot of belief in the group off the back of an encouraging start to the season.
The players and staff feel more settled into our surroundings.
We have been told at least 200 PNG fans are looking forward to attending our game in Mackay.
We love the support we receive in Queensland. While knowing it might not match playing at the Oil Search National Football Stadium, the fans are doing their best to make us feel welcome and supported.
We will take on the Cutters without our vice-captain Keven Appo.
Keven unfortunately was suspended for a shoulder charge after the Ipswich game and will miss two weeks. Other than that, our team has remained fairly stable over the first few rounds and combinations are encouragingly starting to form.
Looking forward to another strong showing from our SP Hunters as we hope to maintain our position on the ladder.
Until next week, stay safe, play safe and let’s all respect and be kind to each other.
Cheers
Matt
