A father who lost two daughters and his properties in a landslide last week is requesting authorities to speed up the relief operation.
Solomon Timbol said grieving relatives and thousands of others badly affected by last week’s earthquake urgently needed shelter, food and clean water.
“It has now gone into the second week since the disaster occurred and we are still waiting,” he said.
“I am talking as a father who lost two children and properties.”
Timbol is the LLG president of Upper Mendi in Southern Highlands.
His daughters Blesinah Timbol, 9, and Gloria Timbol, 13, died after being trapped in the home by the landslide with Grace Dopo, 15, and Annamarie Pat, 13. Grace was the daughter of Imbonggu Proper LLG president Robert Dopo. Annamarie was the daughter of provincial education planner Pat Kowi.
The four were accorded a public funeral in Mendi last Friday attended by relatives, town residents and friends before being taken to their homes for burial.
He joined the call by at least two MPs – James Marape and Philip Undialu – for an investigation into what caused the 7.5 magnitude earthquake.
Provincial acting administrator and disaster committee chairman Thomas Eluh said last Friday he was arranging for two scientists and a technical team to come to Mendi.
The Government allocated K450 million for relief supplies and to restore services.
It also declared a state of emergency in Hela, Southern Highlands, Western and Enga and set up agencies to manage the relief operation.
Relief supplies including food, water, medicine and temporary shelters are being flown into the disaster areas with the help of the Australian government.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said that the relief assistance operation was beginning to reach the people most affected.
