THE Israeli Parliament (Knesset) has acknowledged Papua New Guinea’s support for the Jewish state when Prime Minister Peter O’Neill visited it in Jerusalem.

O’Neill’s delegation was invited as guests of Speaker Yuli Yoel Edelstein on Wednesday to observe the Knesset in session.

Deputy Speaker Shlomo Molla interrupted proceedings to announce the presence of O’Neill and the PNG delegation in the House.

“You have travelled a long way to come and visit and we appreciate this very much. Mr Prime Minister, we are aware of and value the great friendship of your country to the Jewish people and the State of Israel,” he said.

“May I take this opportunity to express to you our appreciation for the political courage your country displays in the international arena and specifically at the United Nations, when you take a firm stand on its moral position and refrain from joining the automatic majority that time after time passes such immoral resolutions against Israel.”

O’Neill visited the Knesset after holding a one-on-one bilateral talk with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu.

PNG is likely to open a mission in Tel Aviv next year although Netanyahu has offered to find an area in Jerusalem for it.

O’Neill was pleased with the outcome of the visit to the Knesset.

“We have strong relations with Israel, and will continue that. Once our cooperation agreements in agriculture and defence are signed,” he said.

“PNG will learn and gain a lot from Israel’s expertise in agriculture, defence and security.

“We are a Christian nation. The Bible and the Holy Land are central to our faith.

“I’m confident the opening of our mission in Israel will strengthen and enhance the existing relation, the cultural and people to people exchange between the two countries.”
