PRIME Minister James Marape has challenged Papua New Guinea Rugby Union to rebuild the game following the launching of the federation’s five-year strategic plan on Thursday.
He pointed out the challenges that the sport had faced over the years with its administration.
Marape said the implementation of the plan would be up to the players and administrators of the game.
“We’ve been playing rugby union since 1958 and we’ve had many events from then up until today,” he said.
“You are not alone in this sport, you belong to a family of sports in our country to show that our youths have meaningful engagements in their lives.
“Today’s events in rugby union can’t be held back because of the past.
“There have been many high moments for rugby union in the past and I’d like to thank the sport for many important things they’ve done at the international level.
“I want to encourage every player and administrators of the sport that this game touches many youths.
“The greatest challenge you will have is not with your compatriots you will be playing against but against yourselves.
“Don’t get worried about what is happening around the world but just focus on the task that is in front of you and take it one day at a time.”
Marape said the Government was in talks with the federation to provide support for its activities with Kumul Petroleum Holdings and National Gaming Control Board to be sponsors of the sport this year.
