PM needs to give a better explanation
The National, Friday March 28th, 2014
PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill released a press statement on March 21 on the decision to seek a K3 billion loan but it did not carry much substance.
In one paragraph, he said “this transaction must comply with our laws,” he did not provide details.
On the other hand, Don Polye, whom he sacked, explained in detail the reasons why he did not sign the loan agreement and which apparently is the reason that the former treasurer was removed.
In another paragraph, O’Neill said “we are fully aware that our people want their government to hold shares in Oil Search because of its strategic interest in our oil and gas fields”.
This is not true as the people were unaware of the intention to seek a K3 billion loan.
This deal, like many others before, was done behind closed doors.
In some instances, he referred to “the PNG government”, but did all those in government agree to it?
Clearly, the K3 billion loan from UBS is not in the interests of the people of PNG.
