With Lae roads getting the right royal treatment, Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare is calling for city authorities to return Lae to its former title of garden city.
Speaking in Lae last Friday at the commissioning of a sealed portion of Huon Road, Sir Michael urged that Ahi or Morobean groups be engaged to beautify the city now that the roads are being improved.
He said that in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, Lae was one of the best tropical gardens in the South Pacific but these had since been neglected and without funding and care had turned to bush.
Meanwhile, Forest Minister Timothy Bonga also announced at the same occasion that his Ministry would be allocating K5 million this year towards re-beautifying the botanical gardens in Lae.
Unlike places such as the National Capital District which experiences hardly any rain, Lae usually enjoys rainfall most year round which accounts for its lush vegetation and delightful markets.
