PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill has urged betel nut chewers and vendors to clean up their rubbish and keep Port Moresby clean in preparation for upcoming international events.

O’Neill urged National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop and the National Capital District Commission to start a clean-up campaign in preparation for events such as the 2015 Pacific Games which Port Moresby is hosting.

“We must do some work now and learn to put our rubbish away in the right place,” O’Neill said. “I believe continuous efforts have been made by city authorities to clean up the city and I appeal to buai chewers to put your rubbish in plastic bags.”

He said people must showcase the beautiful city displaying all cultures during these major events which should in turn promote tourism in the country.  Apart from the 2015 Games, other important international events to be hosted in Port Moresby includes the Melanesian Festival of Arts and the Indonesian Presidential visit next year and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec)  meeting in 2018.

He said as part of major improvements to the city, the government was working closely with JICA to fast track the modern sewerage programme in the city with Japanese engineers.
