PM thankful for trouble-free Independence
The National, Monday September 23rd, 2013
PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill has commended Papua New Guinea for a peaceful celebration of the nation’s 38th independence anniversary.
“I must commend all of you, citizens and residents of our beautiful country, for observing our 38th anniversary as an independent nation in a peaceful manner,” he said.
“I receive reports of celebrations in many parts of the country, even in remote government stations such as Chuave, in Chimbu.
“This is very encouraging for me because people out there can feel the wind of change and want to be part of it.
“There is hope and optimism for the future,” O’Neill said today after returning from a visit to his electorate.
He did not go to his electorate for the celebrations.
He instead opted to visit Goilala, spending the day in Tapini celebrating with the people there.
He delivered the traditional Independence Hill Address to the Nation at 6am before flying to Goilala at 9am.
In his speech, O’Neill paid tribute to Sir John Guise, Sir Paul Lapun, Sir Tei Abal, Sir Michael Okuk, Sir Iambakey Okuk and others who helped laid the foundation of nationhood.
He said while a lot remained to be done, the future looked bright for PNG.
