PM to visit WHP, police on high alert
By JAMES APA GUMUNO
POLICE manpower in the Western Highlands are now concentrating in Jiwaka to deal with anyone trying to cause disturbance during Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare’s visit this morning.
Provincial police commander Supt Kaiglo Ambane issued a stern warning yesterday that police were in full swing carrying out their operational orders since yesterday.
Ambane said police manpower was also boosted by Correctional Services officers from Baisu and PNG Defence Force engineering battalion based at Kerowil near Banz.
He said disciplinary forces would be on full alert and urged people not to cause any disturbances or
nuisance at Minj road junction or in Minj station, adding that the disciplinary forces would arrest any body causing disorder or carrying offensive weapons like bush knives, axes, pocket knives or any other weapons.
Police will also conduct road blocks and check every vehicle on the road.
He urged drivers not to overload their vehicles with passengers and make sure that their vehicles were roadworthy before driving them around, otherwise they would find themselves in trouble.
He also said police would not entertain any drunkards and that anyone seen drinking alcohol in public or walking among the crowd under the influence of alcohol and causing disturbance would be dealt with.
Ambane appealed to the Jiwakans to behave in an orderly manner and respect Sir Michael and other important people visiting their province.
Meanwhile, he said the situation on the ground was very peaceful and people were looking forward to receive Sir Michael today.
