THE Port Moresby Soccer Association has finalised its women’s squad to represent the Southern region at the Besta Cup in Lae next month.
The Clement Anisan-coached side are eager to go one better after losing 2-1 to Lae in the decider last year.
“Last year, we had a lot of new players who didn’t have enough time to bond, so we struggled with our combinations,” Anisan said.
“This year, we started our preparations for the Besta Cup straight after the regional tournament.
“The players have bonded well, with the main focus on tactical skills.
“The squad is basically working on agility, speed and combinations to display quality football at the tournament.”
Jacklyn Chalau, an experienced midfielder who has represented the country on several occasions, will captain the 21-member squad.
Anisan described Guria FC’s Chalau as a skilful attacker with an eye on creating opportunities.
“Jacklyn’s role is how best she can work with the other players and she’s been doing well so far,” Anisan said.
Other notable inclusions in the side are Lavinia Hola and Yvonne Gabong, who were members of the national squad at the U20 Women’s World Cup two years ago.
Anison said they initially named a 22-member squad, however, one player was dropped due to study commitment.
Port Moresby will face Lae, Kimbe and Goroka over the Independence weekend.
