MEMBERS of the Kande PMV Association in Finschhafen are taking it on themselves to fix damaged roads and bridges as a community service.
Association chairman Enoch Gese said they were doing this because the district and local level governments had not allocated any funding for repairs and maintenance.
“We asked PMV owners operating in Finschhafen district to put in K50 each. We bought six bags of cement to fix the broken bridges,” Gese said.
He said the members were facing problems driving through creeks and climbing hills, resulting in mechanical faults and break-downs.
“Another health hazard is when vehicles cross creeks, oil and dirt affect villages downstream,” Gese said.
He said 10 members repaired the Siki Bridge last week and urged other PMV owners to contribute to the cost of repairs.
