LAE’S Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie, pictured, has given public motor vehicle owners seven days to bring their buses up to standard or they would be taken off the road.
The seven-day amnesty started yesterday and owners have a week to make them roadworthy.
In a meeting with bus owners and Lae MP John Rosso on Friday, Wagambie said police and Land Transport were on one side and the bus owners on the other, so the meeting was for them to work in partnership.
“We brought them here to tell them that they provide a very importance service to our people of Lae city. But we want them to provide a good, safe, clean and efficient service’s for our people. Our people deserve quality services,” Wagambie said.
He said good, safe, clean and efficient services cannot happen if there was no communication with the owners. So the meeting was called to accommodate the bus owners to work as a team and help build the city through their service.
“We have given the owners to put their buses in good condition within seven days – to have the buses roadworthy, lights working, brake lights working, registered properly so they can operate,” Wagambie said.
“After the seven days amnesty, we will carry out normal traffic operations to get the buses off the road and have them deregistered. It is important to communicate with bus owners so they must know what we expect from them.”
