Road Transport Authority chief executive Nelson Terema has warned all public transport operators not to reject students or charge them full fare.
He said it was illegal to reject a student from getting onto the bus, or demanding that they pay the full adult fare.
Terema said PMV operators who refused students or charged them full fare should be reported to the authority.
“I encourage parents, students or general public to get the plate number of the bus, the route number, location, time and date and bring it to Road Transport Authority office and action will be taken,” he said.
“PMV operators must apply and comply with the approved fares.
“It is not for them to come up with their own fares.
“Respect students and allow them to have a seat and go to school.
“Do not force them to squeeze into one seat.”
Terema also clarified that the Rta was responsible for imposing traffic fees and fines, and not Motor Vehicle Insurance Ltd (Mvil).
He said everyone should be aware that the
Road Traffic Act of 2014 was effective as of this month.
Terema said the law would be strictly enforced by the Rta, police and provincial governments.
