LONDON: Huddersfield Giants coach Nathan Brown has welcomed new signing and new dad Jason Chan on board this week.
The 26-year-old Papua New Guinea international back-row forward has spent the post-season in Australia, where his wife has given birth to their first child.
As a result, former Crusaders forward Chan missed the start of training as the Giants prepare for Super League XVII next February.
But the new recruit is now back in England and ready to work under Brown for a second time after being coached by the Galpharm chief at Australian NRL club St George earlier in his career. And Brown knows his arrival will provide a welcome boost.
“We always knew Chan would be staying back home until the baby was born, it was only natural,” Brown said.
“But the little one’s arrived now, so Chan’s joined us now.
“He will initially be here on his own, training with us until Christmas. He will then return to Australia, and the family will come back to England with him in the New Year.
“I am sure these next few weeks are going to be pretty tough for him, being away from his wife and new-born, but he was very keen to get here.”
Brown has also confirmed the size of the squad would now be increasing on an almost weekly basis.
“Some of the boys are starting to join us from rehabilitation now,” Brown said.
“We’ll be getting a number back before Christmas, and the more blokes you have training with the full squad, the better.
“Everyone who’s had surgery is doing well. At this stage no-one is behind where they should be.”
Giants stars will again be delighting the pantomime public as they team up with Huddersfield Light Opera Company.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will take place on Jan 10 (7.15pm) at the Lawrence Batley Theatre.
Tickets for the family show, which are expected to sell out quickly, are now on sale at the Galpharm Stadium ticket office or by phoning the ticket hotline on 01484 484123, with prices ranging from £4 and £13. – Huddersfield Daily Examiner
