THE national men’s volleyball team beat Kiribati 3-1 to open their Pacific Games campaign at the National University of Samoa in Apia yesterday.
PNG were led by captain Gia “Toovey” Kapa who was pivotal in setting up his taller teammates to dominate Kiribati.
Before the match got underway, there was minute’s silence for former captain Ravu Mahuru who passed away days out from the Pacific Games. This would have been Mahuru’s fifth Games appearance.
The team have dedicated their campaign to Mahuru who was also the skipper of national champions Vabukori Volleyball Association (Vava).
They started their campaign with a bang and went on from a set apiece to secure the next two to march to victory.
They had too much fire power for their opponents.
There was too much flare with Momo Daera and Junior Harold using their Vava combination to dictate play.
It all came down to experience and combinations as the Vava-dominated squad showed superior skill to find space in their opponents’ territory.
