TEAM Papua New Guinea women’s 4x100m relay set a new national record of 45.85 seconds yesterday after breaking the record of 45.97s set in the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.
Adrine Monagi, Toea Wisil, Isila Apkup and Leonie Beu set the new record and registered gold for Team PNG in the Pacific Mini Games in Saipan, Northern Marianas.
In the events yesterday, athletics recorded five more gold, eight silver and three bronze with 53 medals in total maintaining their dominance in the games.
Mary Tenge (3,000m steeplechase), Daniel Baul (400m hurdles), Annie Topal (triple jump), Shadrick Tansi (400m) and Monagi, Wisil, Apkup and Beu (4x100m relay) prevailed in their events.
The men’s 4x100m relay team of Paias Wisil, Leroy Kamau, Terence Talio and Emmanuel Anis settled for bronze in the last event at the Oleai Sports Complex.
Para-athletes Steven Abraham registered bronze in the ambulant javelin while Regina Edwards won silver in the women’s event. Ephraim Lerkin scooped silver in the 400m having finished after Baul while Topal took out silver in the women’s 400m hurdles.
Emmanuel Wanga settled for silver in the men’s 400m finals after Tansi finished ahead.
Siune Kagl and Rellie Kaputin bagged silver in the men’s 5000m and women’s triple jump respectively.
De’bono Paraka took silver in the men’s shot put 7.26kg while Karo Iga and Peniel Richard won silver and bronze respectively in the men’s high jump. Edna Baofob, Monica Korowi and Adrine Monagi are primed for the women’s hepathlon 100m final today.
Meanwhile, tennis sisters Violet and Patricia Apisah will take on Fiji in the doubles finals today after defeating Tonga 5-7, 6-0, 10-7 in the semifinals yesterday.
Singles player Mathew Stubbings will face a tough opponent in the final today against Northern Marianas’ Colin Sinclair who is ranked in the top-400 in the world and is the top-ranked player in the Pacific.
