PNG to feel effects of Cyclone Josie: Weather office

National

CYCLONE Josie is tracking southeast from North Queensland but it will still cause strong winds around Papua New Guinea, according to the National Weather Service.
“Moderate to fresh north-westerly winds will prevail across the country throughout the week,” said NWS assistant director Jimmy Gomoga.
He said strong wind warning “is current for all waters from Hood Point to Samarai Islands and Milne Bay waters”.
The warning extends to the northern PNG-Indonesian border to Vanimo, Aitape and Wewak and right through to Manus, East and West New Britain, including the Vitiaz Strait, Bismarck, and the Solomon and Coral seas.
The southern parts of PNG will experience a moderate weather pattern with potential risks of flooding, landslides in the highlands.
Light to moderate rainfall will be expected throughout PNG and severe thunderstorms in most parts of the country.
People are advised to avoid going out to sea in small vessels.
