It was a dramatic 1-0 victory for the Solomon Islanders, who finished second behind New Zealand, who topped the pool, and will represent the region at the World Cup U17 women’s title later this year.
PNG fielded an U15 girls side at the tournament and started off their campaign on a high note with a 4-0 thrashing of Tonga in the opening match.
In the following match, they went down the more superior New Zealand side 9-0 before taking on neighbouring Solomon Islands.
New Zealand finished on top and will be representing the Oceania region at the U17 championships later this year.
According to the girls, who come from Madang, Morobe and Port Moresby, the two weeks away from home was the longest many of them had been away for.
