PAPUA New Guinea may not have proper printing houses to print quality books but there is so much potential here in the country to generate content, a publisher says.
Glenn Armstrong has lived in PNG for 20 years and has authored and co-authored a number of PNG-themed books.
One of his famous books titled 100 Treks Across the Kokoda Trail co-authored with Charlie Lynn is a rediscovery of the historical significance of the Kokoda Trail, featuring stunning pictures of the trail and its people.
“PNG has got great content,” he said.
“Your content is the country’s intellectual property and it needs to be shared with Papua New Guineans.
“This is what I’m hoping to do especially through older school children (young adults) to motivate them and get them involved in writing.”
Armstrong said writing should not only be practiced through non-fiction or fiction but as far as writing on social media and at work where spelling was always important.
“I think we need to encourage young people to read, learn language and to experiment with the language as well,” Armstrong said.
Through his company TLA Media, Armstrong will be hosting writing workshops targeting young people.
He said printing materials or getting work published in the country was an issue.
“There are no book printers in Papua New Guinea and hardly any good printers in Australia,” he said.
“A lot of the book printing now are done in Hong Kong and in China.
“Printing are mainly done in Hong Kong because their English is very good and they have access to mainland China where they can buy paper.”
