HOCKEY is preparing for the national championships in Lae during the Queen’s Birthday weekend next month (June11- 13).
Last Friday, the PNG Hockey Federation (PNGHF) presented hockey equipment to Rabaul Hockey Association in its bid to revive hockey in East New Britain’s volcanic town.
Rabaul which was once a strong hockey centre before the  1994 eruptions is now preparing to put a team together for the national championships.
PNGHF president Kaluwin Potuan presented the equipment to RHA chief Thomas Bullem  in Port Moresby.
Potuan said the purpose of the equipment was to kick start hockey and help Rabaul organise their hockey competition in preparation for the PNG Games in Kokopo next year.
The hockey federation will also organise coaching clinics and workshops to complement RHA’s efforts.
Potuan said the  equipment was donated by the Queensland Hockey Federation to the  Oceania Hockey Federation.
“The PNG Hockey Federation is also distributing  equipment to other centres such as Manus, Lae, Madang, Goroka, Port Moresby and NCD, as part of our support to local associations,” Potuan said
Meanwhile, PNGHF will send their development officer  Sae Dowara to Wewak, East Sepik to introduce the sport there.
Dowara will be in Wewak for one week talking to interested groups and meeting with the ESP sports division with the hope of generating interest.
Dowara will also conduct coaching and basic skills clinics during his stay.
