THE National Capital District (NCD) governor’s radical move to rezone the 8 mile settlement outside Port Moresby into the country’s first suburb shows that he is a modern era leader.
He is moving settlers at 2 mile there.
Ghettos, shanty towns, slums, settlements and so on are not new in this world.
Places such as Paulo and Brazil’s capital, Rio de Janerio, have millions of people living in such places.
Thus PNG is no exception.
Our government cannot provide housing for most of its workforce, many of whom end up living in settlements.
Today, settlements are no longer criminal breeding grounds, as formerly perceived.
It is a home to many decent families who work hard every day for an honest living and their children.
The recent Bumbu bridge settlement eviction saw a thousand homes torn down.
The term “Blitzkreig” used by the German in the WWII for a quick and intensive attack would describe the incident well.
I applaud Governor Powes Parkop’s move and I urge other urban leaders to think along the same line.
