The National, Wednesday July 16th, 2014
PNG Ports Corporation Ltd has committed K5000 to Kokopo, in East New Britain, to stage its cultural show called the Warwagira and Mask Festival.
The support is part of the corporation’s corporate responsibility to help the development and promotion of the tourism industry in PNG and Kokopo.
Warwagira means showcasing in the Tolai Kuanua language and is the annual provincial cultural festival where the main ethnic groups in the province participate and perform traditional dances to preserve and protect them and develop tourism in the province.
The festival will start tomorrow and ends on July 21.
PNG Ports chief executive Stanley Alphonse said they were committed to strengthening relations with key tourism developers and promoters.
“The aim is to attract more tourists to visit the maritime provinces by supporting relevant organisations to host such cultural initiatives and major provincial events,” Alphonse said.
He said PNG Ports’ core area of focus for development and promotion was the maritime tourism.
