THE board of PNG Power Ltd has placed a ban on overseas travel by its members, management and staff unless it gives its approval.

This follows concerns raised by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill on the recent power outages in Lae while the chief executive John Tangit and two board members were away on overseas jaunts.

Deputy chairman Thomas Laka said any further trips to be taken by board members and Tangit had to be vetted by the Independent Public Business Corporation. He said an urgent board meeting was held  last Thursday to discuss the power outage and the overseas travel.

He said in a statement: “The board expressed at its meeting that it had in fact raised concerns about frequent trips taken by the CEO and had previously tasked the internal audit team to conduct an audit into the overseas travel by the CEO and the staff of the organisation, and a report was going to be provided to the board in its next meeting.”
