PNG POWER Limited and the PNG Correctional Service have signed a partnership to train prisoners and to involve them in community service.
The partnership was signed by the PNG Power acting managing director Carolyn Blacklock and PNG Correctional Service acting Commissioner Stephen Pokanis on Tuesday in Port Moresby.
Pokanis said involving detainees in this project will give confidence to the community and to the people. He said the prisoners were not only criminals or offenders but were citizens of this country and giving them the opportunity to participate in community service was vital.
Pokanis said this was a way for prisoners to get back their self-esteem.
“It is a good opportunity and we look forward to working with PNG Power especially at the provincial level,” he said.
“We will advise our commanding officers, CS officers and prisoners to work with the PPL staff and operations.
“We hope that out from this we will learn a lot and improve and if all goes well, I would like to see more of this.”
Blacklock said the partnership was for PPL to train prisoners and equip them with new skills and to involve them in community service.
She said the project was an initiative of Wayne Baloiloi, the businesses centre manager for PPL in Alotau.
