PNG Power yesterday celebrated 50 years since starting operations on July 1, 1963 as the PNG Electricity Commission (ELCOM).

The day was marked with a procession around Port Moresby and the opening of a time capsule at the PNG Power head office at Hohola.

The highlight of the day was the opening of the time capsule buried on July 1, 1988, to mark its silver jubilee.

The capsule contained items including a recruitment video tape, yearly plans, reports and ELCOM uniforms.

It was again refilled with annual reports and yearly plans, safety gear and uniforms and other items and is set to be opened on July 1, 2038.

Company acting chief executive officer, John Tangit praised ELCOM and PNG Power for their hard work and loyalty.

Celebrations will continue throughout the week.
