PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill says PNG Power has been restructured with reforms to provide electricity to everyone.
“We are undertaking new reforms so that we can provide power with our partners who signed recently — Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the United States — which will see the expansion of electricity to 70 per cent by 2030,” O’Neill said.
“We are changing the way we conduct that business. We are undertaking dramatic reforms so that we can provide power with our partners.”
O’Neill said independent power producers would use the domestic market obligations to change the diesel power stations.
He said this was a serious game changer that should transform the country.
“We are reforming the way we deliver electricity to our country and we will continue to work with the industry. While it is a serious challenge and undertaking, we need the industry’s full support,” he said.
“We don’t want any more bailouts and certainly don’t want any more tariff increases.”
O’Neill said the second LNG extension of P’nyang and projects such as Wafi-Golpu would present unique opportunities for the country.
“It will enable us to strike a sensible balance fair deal for developers, local districts and provincial governments. The strength of our country lies with its people. We have a bright future in the petroleum and energy sector. We will continue to advance this sector by being pro-active.”
