PNG Power tipped to win men’s softball crown
The National, Friday 02nd March 2012
WITH the 2012 season winding down, the climax is set for a top-five finish in the Port Moresby softball men’s A Grade competition. Last season premiers PNG Power are once again set to re-claim the minor premiership tag when they face arch rivals Gazelle.
PNG Power have maintained consistency in their batting which has been their trademark. Gazelle’s pitcher can expect some fireworks from the Tovia brothers if not contained throughout the innings.
PNG Power and Bears need to win their respective games this weekend if they are keen to remain at the top of the table.
PNG Power will face a strong Gazelle line-up led by David Mickey and Collin Mangot while Bears will have to fight hard against a fired-up United Brothers who are focused on causing an upset.
United Brothers are renowned for their deadly batting strength which will be a headache for Bears’ international pitcher Anslom Bunbun. However, Bears have done well this season in promoting a couple of their juniors who are adding value to the team. Brothers know they can’t afford to relax.
The fifth spot is a toss-up between Defence and Mantarays. The Douglas Paak coached Defence team will be looking at making the finals for the first time at the expense of entertainers Stingerz while for Mantarays they lock horns with Dolphins who will be playing to restore some pride after two consecutive forfeits in the past two weeks.
In the B grade, Gazelle look set to take the minor premiership followed closely by Dolphins who should easily claim the second spot while Bears, Brown Eagles and Stingerz bring out the rear.
All games will be played out on Diamond two and three on Saturday while the wash-out games will be played out on Diamond On on Sunday.
