PNG Power has been tasked to provide electricity to Oro Bay in Northern – one of the landing stations for the domestic fibre optic cable.
Acting managing director Carolyn Blacklock, pictured, said they were responsible for connecting electricity to the 14 landing stations at a cost of about K30 million.
“The landing station for the domestic cable comes into Oro Bay which does not have electricity,” she said.
“We will need to connect electricity from Popondetta to Oro Bay this year.
“We are actually talking about connectivity not just electricity, giving people access to electricity and internet services.”
The project funded by the Australian government will involve the 14 stations in Port Moresby, Alotau, Popondetta, Lae, Madang, Wewak, Vanimo, Lorengau, Kimbe, Kokopo, Kavieng, Kerema, Daru and Arawa.
Blacklock said the priority centers for this year were Lae, Port Moresby, Alotau and Madang.
The other 10 would most likely be done next year.
“When people see the power lines they will follow through so we have to connect the homes in these areas as well,” she said.
