PNG POWER is now set to sell certified emissions reductions (CERs) with the registration of its first clean development mechanism (CDM) project.
The CDM was registered by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and has enabled PPL to be eligible to sell CERs, or carbon credits, for all its power stations less than 15 MW, which it developed using renewable energy to produce electricity which can offset the emissions from diesel power stations.
PPL director of strategy and marketing Lawrence Solomon said there were very stringent guidelines that the company  had to follow to be able to get a registration and there will be constant monitoring and verification as part of the process to ensure that all information provided to UNFCCC are accurate.
“This is a milestone for PNG Power as it is the first PoA (programmes of activities) that was registered under CDM among the Pacific Island countries and will be used for renewable electricity generation projects including hydropower projects, wind, geothermal, solar, biomass and tidal wave,” he said.
The registration of PPL’s CDM brings to a total of two CDMs so far in the country with Lihir Gold Mine being the first to register.
With the CDM being registered, PPL has submitted its town electrification improvement project programme, which looks at providing sustainable and reliable electricity to the major townships of PNG through renewable power generation.
The TEIP programme included the Divune hydro power station in Oro and Ramazon hydropower projects station in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville and the extension of PPL power systems from Kimbe to Bialla as the projects for its CDM programme of activities.
The PoA contributes to the sustainable development of PNG and is in line with the goals and objectives of the PNG Vision 2050 and PNG Development Strategic Plan 2010-2030, and is designed in such a way that other renewable energy developers can participate in the programme that PPL will facilitate.
The programme may later be extended to other Pacific Island countries.
