TAG Rugby has been endorsed by PNG Rugby as a worthwhile cause in building interest and participation in rugby union.
The format introduced by Mauricio Diaz and slated to begin in April was given the nod of approval by International Rugby Board (IRB) country manager Simon Kerr last week.
Kerr said PNG Rugby was happy to back the initiative by helping to provide some equipment, source sponsorship and volunteers for the junior programme.
He added although PNG Rugby had a hectic schedule in 2012, Rugby office was pleased that a competition targeting children up to the age of 12 was set to take place in the coming weeks.
Tag Rugby is a form of non-contact rugby designed to introduce the sport to children from the age of seven and develop skills such as passing, catching, running and evasion.
Diaz said registration of teams would be open next month on their website: [email protected]
“We are expecting 40 teams to register for the competition which begins in April in Port Moresby,” Diaz said.
“There will be 480 kids playing Tag Rugby in the under-12 age category.”
