IT was a moment of celebration for the PNG Scouts Association when its Chief Commissioner Sere Kala was elected chairman of the Council of the South Pacific Association.
Kala was elected during the seventh council of South Pacific forum from July 21-24 in Noumea, New Calendonia.
“I wish to thank all fellow commissioners in the South Pacific for having the trust and confidence in me to take this extra responsibility to help advance scouting in the Pacific,” Kala said.
He said his biggest challenge was to look at creative and more innovative ways to capture the interest of young people in Pacific nations.
Chief commissioners from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Tonga and PNG attended the forum.
The commissioner’s forum was attended by PNG Scouts national treasurer Noel Pinda.
PNG has been elected as the secretariat to the Pacific Forum 2014.
“As we all know culture is changing at a fast rate and the challenge to meet the demands of our youth through medium-term development programmes to sustain their interest must be adhered to with support of strong leadership within the region,” Kala said.
“We need to have closer dialogue and strengthen our bilateral agreements of what programmes and training we need to have greater interaction and fellowship with scouting in the Pacific in the coming years.”
