THE country still has a lot of work to do to “connect” its people, an official says.
Information Technology Development Steering Group convenor Kila Gula Vui told the Apec Telecommunication and Information working group meeting in Port Moresby that PNG needed to catch up with the rest of the countries in the region by ensuring people had access to communication technology.
“This session was on addressing connectivity issues – basically broadband – and that is about people who have access to smartphones in terms of sharing information and experiences in Apec economies and how to connect and provide ICT services to our citizens,” Vui said.
“Challenges vary from economy to economy. For PNG, we can look into new places through discussions and experience shared in this meeting.”
The meeting discussed how to develop information and communication technology and broadcasting and make it available to people.
Apec Ambassador Ivan Pomaleu said PNG’s ICT sector was less developed but had the potential to drive economic growth.
He said the ICT environment in PNG was less developed compared to most of the 21 Apec economies.
