PNG thump Malaysia, lose rest

 PAPUA New Guinea’s sevens team displayed courage and skill in their second pool game against Malaysia on Saturday with a 36-7 win.

Earlier in the day the PNG men put up a strong fight against Samoa and were in the race to win when they were tied with the Samoans 14-14 at half time.

In the second half, the pool favourites consitently tested the defence of the PNG men until they made the breaks and scored tries.

The game ended in favour of Samoa, 33-14 at the Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow.

Against Malaysia, PNG opened up the score board with speedster Hubert Tseraha shocking the Malaysians when he sprinted down the left edge to score in the first try after bearly 60 seconds of play.

The conversion was unsuccessful.

Malaysia replied with a try and a successful conversion a minute later.

At one point in the first half, captain Billy Torea and speedster Wesley Vali were sin-binned for  danderous stackles.

However, the five that remained put up a very strong defence and prevented the Malaysians from scoring until the binned players came back on.

Malaysia went into the break 5-7 ahead.

After the break, a few changes were made, including the fielding of another speedster Albert Levi.

Three minutes into the second half, a good break by Henry Kalua and an offload to Vali had the Southern Highlander scoring a try on the right edge. The Pukpuks were not done yet because a minute later that Levi tucked a Tseraha pass under his arm and raced in to score again.

Another try from Levi and others from Emmanuel Guise, Kalua and Dondon Kais put PNG too far ahead of the game for the Malaysians to catch up.

PNG were sent tumbleing in their  final pool match against Wales losing 29-7.
