THE Papua New Guinea Kumuls are focused on communication in defence heading into next week’s inaugural Rugby League World Cup Nines in Sydney, Australia.
Head coach Michael Marum highlighted this at the Kumuls’ training session in Port Moresby yesterday.
Marum is confident with his side’s ability to score points but says the team are working on their defensive structures in the shorter format.
“Even though it’s the shorter version of the game, it is defence that win games. We need to know which line we are defending and what side.
“The key for us is communication and that is what we are focusing on this week.
“The boys have done well in training and we are looking to continue with that leading up the tournament next week.” The tournament will be held at Bankwest Stadium from Oct 18-19.
Marum said he was looking forward to seeing what his overseas-based players had to offer.
“They bring a bit more experience which will boost the team,” he said.
“We carried out fitness tests on them and some of them have put on weights. We have instructed them about what to eat and how to look after their body.”
Kumuls captain Rhyse Martin said he was excited about the new faces in the side like Stanford Talita and Jedidiah Simbiken.
“There’s a lot of power and skills in these boys. It’s good to see guys like Stanford getting the opportunity to play at this level,” Martin said.
“It’s also good to see Garry (Lo) back in the side.
“Guys like him and Justin (Olam) bring power to the team.
“We just have to believe in our abilities.”
