THE International Basketball Federation (Fiba) has awarded the hosting rights for next year’s Under-15 Oceania Championships to Papua New Guinea — the event will take place from Dec 7-12.
The bidding process was opened in May for the 2020, 2021 and 2022 Fiba Oceania Youth Championships.
“It is with great pleasure and confidence to award the bidding rights of the 2020 Fiba U15 Oceania Championship to PNG. Basketball Federation of PNG has demonstrated incredible capabilities in hosting Fiba events dating back to the 2017 Fiba Melanesia Cup,” Fiba Oceania executive director David Crocker said in a statement.
“We are looking forward to another highly successful event in Port Moresby.”
The championships serves as the first step in the qualification process to the Fiba U17 World Championship.
The top-two finishers of each tournament will guarantee a spot to the Fiba U16 Asian Championship — the final qualifier to the World Championships.
PNG’s recent hosting experience includes the 2017 Melanesia Cup, the 2018 Fiba U15 Oceania Championships and the 2015 Pacific Games.
