THE national women team (Amoa) travelled to Canberra yesterday to compete in the Australia Neighborhood Volleyball as part of their preparations for the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.
The Nov 22-24 tournament will help the side gain experience
This trip to Canberra to play in the Australian Neighborhood Volleyball Challenge on Nov 22-24 is to develop and gain experience for the women’s elite players to prepare in advance for the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
PNG Volleyball Federation president Kila Dick said National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop and the commission backed the sport’s governing body with K50,000 ahead of the Nov 22-24 tournament.
“We also had Pacific Corporate Security managing director Jacob Kaupa, Bank South Pacific, Oil Search Foundation, Airways Hotel, PNG Sports Foundation, Teachers Saving and Loans Society and Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko all back us,” he said.
“On behalf of the federation, I thank all our partners for helping our women to travel to Canberra.”
Dick said he was counting on skipper Clara Vele, vice-captain Veuga Sinari, Perpetua Awadu, Hitolo Raka Philo Ameisa and Josie Dick to lead the way for debutants Caroline Kila, Antoinette Aisakina, Linda Aufa, Priscilla Kae, Doriga Oni and Theresa Fagau.
Vele said: “We have prepared for months after we were omitted from the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.
“We are going to Canberra to gain experience and expose our new talent ahead of the next Pacific Games. We are not taking this lightly as we have a point to prove to our critics.
“We all know what is required of us. President is always vocal about us being disciplined and committed. We need to go into the tournament with a positive attitude.”
