PAPUA New Guinea won the bid to host the 2016 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.

The announcement was made yesterday by PNG Weightlifting Federation vice president Frank Robby.

Robby said PNG won ahead of Fiji while Samoa withdrew its bid to back PNG instead.

He said at the end of the year the Commonwealth championships would be held in India.

Robby said all these successful outcomes in the sport of weightlifting would not have been possible without the contribution of the  Oceania Weightlifting Federation general-secretary Paul Coffa and the Government of PNG.

“That is why this Pacific Games is so special to us because we would be using this to test the facilities,” he said.
