NEW recruits from the PNG Defence Force have been put through10 weeks of intensive training as part of deployment preparation.
This is also part of induction into joining the infantry at the 1RPIR at Taurama Barracks.
Last Saturday, 74 were put through safety at sea and river crossing drills at the Murray Barracks swimming pool.
Major Chris Kalvale, of Charlie Company, said the aspect of the drill was to ensure that soldiers learned basic swimming drills and floatation without the use of oxygen.
Kalvale said soldiers were taught how to use their uniforms as floaters to reach safety. He said after the 10 weeks’ training soldiers would become infantry men.
