The 2nd Royal Pacific Island Regiment (2RPIR) at Moem Barracks in East Sepik has a new commanding officer, Lt-Col Raphael Yapu.
The handover ceremony was held on Tuesday in Wewak. Outgoing commanding officer Lt-Col Lari Opa praised the people of East Sepik, the local administration and Governor Sir Michael Somare for their support over the past two years.
Opa said the East Sepik government’s support was reflected through its continuous funding for 2RPIR.
“I would like to extend my thank you, on behalf of the unit, to West Sepik Governor Amkat Mai and the provincial administrator Henry Norm for the support given to the troops deployed in Vanimo,” he said.
Commending the troops for their corporation and effort, Opa said he was proud of what they had achieved.
Opa, from Gulf, has been appointed deputy commander of the PNG Apec 2018 Safety and Security Joint Task Force.
